Meet Jon: A Proven Leader
I believe we all come from different backgrounds, but are unified in our desire to improve this county. I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and moved to Iola 17 years ago. Serving on the city council and as mayor is truly an honor. My grandparents, mother, aunt, and uncles fled communist Cuba in 1961. I am continuously thankful for our democratic system. Time and time again this system reaffirms that all citizens can participate and lead our communities regardless of our national origins.
In 2005, I earned my B.A. in Political Science, and in 2007, I earned my M.A. in History from the University of Tulsa. In 2019 finished my doctorate (PhD.) in History from the University of Kansas.
My employment history has deeply influenced my outlook on governance. In 2004, I worked with the U.S. Department of State in Buenos Aires, Argentina on G-8 counter terrorism assitance to Argentina and the "Southern Cone." I also worked closely, with the Argentine government on coordinating military assistance and humanitarian aid to the U.N. Peace Keeping Operation in Haiti. These experiences taught me the the value of cooperation, collaboration, and compromise.
For 17 years, I have taught at Allen Community College as an instructor of History and Political Science. As a life long educator, I know the importance of all forms of education. Much of my teachings revolve around a central question "what's the goal of government, on a federal, state, and local level?" On the local level, I believe we must keep taxes low, but not at the expense of gutting our infrastructure, utilities, and services.
I will use my experiences, knowledge, and upbringing to promote the growth and cooperation across the county.
